SEED LISTS FOR GRASSLAND COMMUNITIES

 

Use the following key to find the species lists best suited to your particular site:

 
  1. Site is located in a floodplain

2. Site has wetland (hydric) soils

3. Site has standing water throughout the year or has ponding or flooding a few weeks of the year and is usually a low area in a open field, a ditch, area adjacent to a pond, etc.

MARSHES-WET MEADOW (OPEN, HIGH SUNLIGHT, CALCAREOUS, WITH FREQUENT PONDING)

3. Site has only saturated soils but they are rarely if ever flooded and is usually flat

WET MEADOW (OPEN, HIGH SUNLIGHT, CALCAREOUS, WET TO WET-MESIC)

2. Site has non-wetland (non-hydric) soils

DRY-MESIC MEADOW (OPEN, HIGH SUNLIGHT, CALCAREOUS, DRY TO MESIC)

  1. Site is located outside a floodplain such as on an adjacent upland terrace, hillside, or rolling upland landscape

4. Site has deep to moderately deep soils at least >10 inches deep, bedrock outcrops, rocks, or gravel not abundant on the surface

DRY-MESIC MEADOW (OPEN, HIGH SUNLIGHT, CALCAREOUS, DRY TO MESIC)

4. Site has shallow soil 0-10 inches deep, bedrock outcrops, rock, or gravel are frequent at or just beneath the surface

ROCKY SAVANNAS, GLADES, & BARRENS (OPEN, HIGH SUNLIGHT, CALCAREOUS, SHALLOW ROCKY SOIL)
