The loss of southeastern U.S. grasslands represents is the leading cause of biodiversity decline in eastern North America. Few people realize that the region from Pennsylvania and Missouri south to Florida and east Texas once supported more than 100 million acres of prairies, savannas, meadows, glades, barrens and other kinds of open grasslands prior to European settlement. Today, more than 90% of Southeastern grasslands have been lost, yet more than half of the terrestrial biodiversity of the South is found in these last remaining remnants. SGI has developed a multifaceted approach to restoring, rebuilding, and conserving our “Forgotten Grasslands of the South" and is developing partnerships.
