Indigenous Land Stewardship technician

Austin Peay State University’s (APSU) Southeastern Grasslands Institute (SGI) invites applications for one seasonal Indigenous Land Stewardship Technician position to restore native grassland ecosystems throughout Middle Tennessee. This hands-on, field-based role involves invasive species control, seed collection, prescribed fire implementation, and other restoration activities under the oversight and training of the restoration team. SGI is especially seeking candidates with knowledge of, or strong connections to, Indigenous communities. A key part of this role is helping to reintroduce Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) and Indigenous land stewardship practices into our restoration work. The position is located in Clarksville, TN (45 miles from Nashville, TN). This is a six-month position starting at $20 per hour for 37.5 hours per week. The Technician will receive daily direction from a Lead Restoration Technician, working as an integral part of the restoration Program.

Coordinator & Ecologist, Central Appalachian Grasslands

Summary | Roanoke, VA

Austin Peay State University’s (APSU) Southeastern Grasslands Institute (SGI) invites applications for a Coordinator position based in the Roanoke, Virginia office. This is a full-time, nontenure-track position. The Ecologist's primary role will be to support SGI's efforts to manage grassland conservation projects across some of the most iconic National Parks in the Eastern U.S., including, but not limited to, Shenandoah National Park, Gettysburg National Battlefield, and others. In addition to working at National Parks, this position will lead a team to uplift grasslands across public and private lands across the region. This position includes a strong component of team leadership, botany, community ecology, restoration, and grant writing to help secure future funding to support this position and expand programming/staffing needs in the region. Frequent travel will be required to reach the various project areas, with overnight stays and travel expenses covered by grant funds. Working from home will be possible for a few specific desk-based tasks. This position will report to SGI’s Chief of Ecological Restoration.

nps sEASONAL fIELD tECHNICIAN

Summary | Roanoke/Salem, VA

Austin Peay State University’s (APSU) Southeastern Grasslands Institute (SGI) invites applications for a Field Technician position located in the Roanoke/Salem, VA area. Funding is available for six months, at $20/hour for 37.5 hours/week. Technicians will be responsible for carrying out grassland restoration and land management tasks at a diverse array of national parks across the Eastern US, including Shenandoah National Park, Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park, Gateway National Recreation Area, and others. Field Technicians will travel extensively throughout the course of the position, typically on an 8-day on/6-day off schedule, with all travel expenses covered by grant funds. The Field Technician will receive daily direction from a Lead Field Technician and directly report to SGI’s Central Appalachian Grasslands Coordinator.

NPS Seasonal Monitoring Technician (2)

Summary | Roanoke/Salem, VA

Austin Peay State University’s (APSU) Southeastern Grasslands Institute (SGI) invites applications for two Monitoring Technician positions located in the Roanoke/Salem, VA area. Funding is available for six months, at $20/hour for 37.5 hours/week. Technicians will be responsible for conducting grassland plant biodiversity surveys at grassland restoration and reconstruction sites in national parks across the Eastern US, including Manassas National Battlefield Park, Valley Forge National Historical Park, and Gateway National Recreation Area. Monitoring Technicians will travel extensively throughout the course of the position, typically for 3 to 5-day work-week trips, with all travel expenses covered by grant funds. The Monitoring Technicians will travel and conduct surveys alongside SGI’s Central Appalachian and MidAtlantic Grasslands Coordinators. Monitoring technicians may also be asked to assist the Field Technician crew on grassland restoration and land management tasks at a diverse array of national parks across the Eastern US, typically on an 8-day on/6-day off schedule, with all travel expenses covered by grant funds.
